Bodies Are Meant To Be Fluid

There is no such thing as a perfect body. Yep, we said it.

An unpopular opinion by the media’s standards, we know.

But it is the truth, because beauty standards are changing allllll the time.

What might be labelled as the “perfect body” today will likely be out of fashion in 10 years.

And even if we already know that, the struggle is still so real.

How many times have you stood in front of the mirror and picked apart every single “flaw” you could see? Have you cried in a change room? Called yourself something mean? Felt insecure and vulnerable in a bathing suit?

You’re not alone.

As we age our body shape-shifts so much it can become unrecognizable sometimes.

Maybe we get curves in different places, or maybe we don’t.

Regardless, society makes us feel ashamed about either one.

Throughout our lives our body changes infinitely, and honestly, that’s one of the only things we can actually know to be certain as we age — that our bodies will change.

Geez!

You might notice that even within one moon cycle certain clothes fit differently and your appetite has changed too. This is normal! It is our attachment to the unrealistic standards of beauty and our labelling of good vs. bad bodies that creates negative and positive associations with these changes.

It’s learning to ask yourself:

Can I still accept my body even if I don’t look like the “perfect” version of myself?

If you want to do something radical, get in the habit of reminding yourself that all bodies are good bodies.

We can never create a stable sense of confidence and self worth if we are attached to one specific idea of “beauty” and constantly chase it. This sets us up for failure because we are meant to change and grow with your seasons and cycles. Body image insecurities are less about what your body actually looks like, and more about our perception of what the “ideal” body we are striving to achieve will provide us.

The pressures for thinness and a specific image of “beauty” is imposed by our current culture and society. This image of perfect beauty is ever-changing as our societal values change. Take a moment to Google the beauty standards of the 1700s, the 20s, the 80s and the 90s and compare them to now.

And why do they change?

The short answer is because of marketing. Marketing preys on our insecurities to sell us the idea of needing to look a certain way to be happy and confident. Each of us has our own interpretation of beauty, and when our ideal is out of reach from the reality of what we look like, we set ourselves up for self-shame and hate. Body image acceptance starts with detaching our worth from our appearance alone.

So now ask yourself:

What do I love about myself that has nothing to do with my physical appearance?
